Ms. Baumann Recommends “American Born Chinese” by Gene Luen Yang

Ms. Baumann Recommends

I just finished the book American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang. It was insightful and thought-provoking… AND IT MADE ME LAUGH! It is written in the format of a graphic novel, so the author uses words and pictures to describe what is happening. This gives the characters more personality as you SEE the story “play out” in front of you. The major theme of the book is about staying true to yourself. A teenager who is Chinese has trouble fitting in at high school in America. He feels the pressure to hide any trace of Chinese cultural influences and conform to the typical American teenage life. This affects his friendships, family relationships, and confidence in his own identity. If you want to read a heartfelt story told in a nontraditional way, this is a the book for you! And it’s quick read (took only a couple of hours)!
