UNITY: n.

  1. n. A relation of all the parts or elements of a work constituting a harmonious whole and producing a single general effect.
  2. n. In dramatic structure; Three Unities: Unity of Time, Place, and Action
  • Example:
    • The three piece floral vase centerpiece collection created by the Art Department for the district meeting demonstrated unity in color, material, and style.

 

EMPHASIS: n.

  1. n. In art; prominence, as a form or outline
  • Example:
    • One must be careful that the emphasis of a piece of art, or the emphasis in a scene, is placed on the central figure or point intended by the artist, creator, author, or playwright.

 

MOVEMENT: n.

  1. n. The path the viewer’s eye takes through the artwork, or in a scene, often to a focal area. It can be directed along lines, edges, shapes and color.
  • Example:
    • The movement of the piece drew my eye to a point far in the distance, where it focused on a setting sun.

 

BALANCE: n.

  1. n. The way in which lines, shapes, colors, textures and the like are arranged in a piece. (symmetrical, asymmetrical, weight, etc.)
  • Example:
    • The placement of class designed stained glass seals in the hub on alternating window panes is a form of balance in art.
