euphemism

noun

1. the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression which is usually thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt.

2. the expression substituted for another: “To pass away”, “To kick the bucket”, and to “Meet your maker” are all euphemisms for “to die”.

Example: Rather than say he had to go to the bathroom, the young man used an inappropriate euphamism.
