Elevator Constructors should be mechanically and electrically adept, with the willingness to take directions and to learn. The work also requires heavy lifting, comfort with heights, and working in a variety of weather conditions and environments. Once apprentices complete a probationary period and on-the-job training with journey-level mechanics, they are eligible to participate in the craft’s education program. Classes cover rigging, electrical construction, hydraulics, and material handling. It takes a minimum of five years to complete the courses offered.
